چکیده

Vegetative buffer strips are being widely promoted as an effective technique to protect rivers and streams from the negative impacts of adjacent land uses including forestry and agriculture. An extensive review of the literature revealed that despite the intuitive appeal of buffer strips, data demonstrating their efficacy is highly variable and most studies demonstrating significant nutrient removal in buffer zones come from studies undertaken in riparian buffers greater than 30 m wide. These buffers are much wider than what land managers can typically expect farmers to remove from active production in order to protect water quality. Research attempting to demonstrate the efficacy of riparian buffers needs to focus on buffer widths that are within the range that landowners are likely to “give up” in the name of water quality protection. Lack of experimental evidence from buffers in the 1to 10-m width range typically encountered on farms makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about the efficacy of riparian buffers in agricultural areas.

Investigation of phenological stages and pollutants’ type on the efficiency of vegetative buffer strips

Non-point source pollution is considered as a serious issue especially in the field of eutrophication for surface waters. Vegetative buffer strips include a specific plant being passed by flow before entering the waterways, so it causes to reduce runoff volume, deposited pesticides and other pollutants of the flow through infiltration, absorption and sediment deposition. The present study has b...

Buffering the Buffer 1

Riparian buffer strips are a widely accepted tool for helping to sustain aquatic ecosystems and to protect downstream resources and values in forested areas, but controversy persists over how wide a buffer strip is necessary. The physical integrity of stream channels is expected to be sustained if the characteristics and rates of tree fall along buffered reaches are similar to those in undistur...

تأثیر سد کرخه بر الگوی پراکنش مکانی جنگل های کناررودی در پارک ملی کرخه

Effective river ecosystem management requires that the existing hydrologic regime be characterized in terms of the natural hydrologic regime and the degree to which the human-altered regime differs from natural conditions. This is known as Range of Variation Approach (RVA) and can be used for variation of stream flow, range of variation and appraisal of dam impacts on riparian zones. In this pa...

Riparian buffer strips as a multifunctional management tool in agricultural landscapes: introduction.

Catchment riparian areas are considered key zones to target mitigation measures aimed at interrupting the movement of diffuse substances from agricultural land to surface waters. Hence, unfertilized buffer strips have become a widely studied and implemented "edge of field" mitigation measure assumed to provide an effective physical barrier against nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sediment tran...
